Harry Jerome Recreation Centre
Bravo for the council members at the City of North Vancouver for putting the brakes on the re-design of the Harry Jerome Recreation Centre. One cause for consideration is to increase the proposed pool size from 25 meters to 50 meters. It is not that the council is opposed to the larger pool, the City can’t carry the cost alone.
To help offset the cost of the project, the City had directed to include 350,000 square feet of residential space to include low-rises and high-rises without any OCP for that area—between 21st Street and Highway 1 . The idea–the City would ask the developers for cash rather than amenities for the district to help fund the project.
The decision to step back and gather more community input and information until January of 2014 was prudent. At the end of the day, Mayor Darrell Mussatto’s challenge to the pool user’s to continue fundraising and applying for grants will be a work in progress.
