West Vancouver Council would like to attract a more diverse and affordable option for housing developments. Specific ideas are affordable seniors’ housing, infill development and coach houses and changing the OCP for more innovative housing proposals. Most council members were receptive to different housing options to include townhouses and secondary suites.
For those curious as to the definition of infill housing, it is the insertion of housing units in a developed and approved subdivisions or neighbourhoods. This can be as simple as providing additional units on the lot or existing building—YIKES. This can change the overall scope and look of the neighbourhood.
Councilman Bill Soprovich warned council members that West Vancouver could turn into “East of Lonsdale”. He accuses the City of North Vancouver of “going overboard” with permits for secondary suites in that corridor making it impossible to park.
A new coach house policy is expected in the summer. I will keep you posted.
